Remote jobs in New York
How New York taxes remote wages
New York is the state most likely to tax a remote worker who does not live there. Under its convenience-of-the-employer rule, days you work from home for a New York employer count as New York workdays unless you can show the employer required the out-of-state location — a bona fide office, not a personal preference. Someone who moves out of New York but keeps a New York job typically still owes New York tax on that income, and their new home state may tax it as well. Resident credits often resolve the overlap, but not always, and not fully. New Jersey and Connecticut residents working for New York employers are the classic exposed case.
Working remotely from New York
New York City holds one of the two largest concentrations of remote-eligible employers in the country, especially in finance, media and advertising, so a large share of nationally advertised remote roles sit on New York payroll. Eastern time is the default meeting zone for most US companies, which means a New York-based worker rarely takes a call outside normal hours — that burden falls on their Pacific colleagues instead.
Your day against the other US zones
Assuming a 9am-5pm working day on the other team's clock, this is when you would need to be online in ET, and how many hours you actually share.
| Team zone | Shared hours | Your hours (ET) | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|
| Central | 7h | 10:00 AM – 6:00 PM | Full overlap |
| Mountain | 6h | 11:00 AM – 7:00 PM | Strong overlap |
| Pacific | 5h | 12:00 PM – 8:00 PM | Strong overlap |
