Remote jobs in Texas
How Texas taxes remote wages
Texas levies no personal income tax of any kind, so wages earned by a Texas resident working remotely are not taxed at the state level. The state constitution requires a statewide referendum to impose one, which makes the position far more durable than in states that merely have a low rate today. The trade-off sits on the other side of the ledger: Texas funds itself through property and sales taxes, and its effective property tax rate is among the highest in the country. A remote worker who moves to Texas and buys a house can hand back much of what they saved on income tax.
Working remotely from Texas
Texas spans two time zones, but the Central band holds Houston, Dallas, San Antonio and Austin, which is effectively all of its remote hiring. Central is the most forgiving zone in the country for remote work: one hour behind Eastern and two ahead of Pacific, so a Texas worker can take a 9am standup with a New York team and still catch a late-afternoon call with San Francisco without either being unreasonable. Austin has enough of a technology employer base that nationally advertised remote roles frequently list it as a hub office.
Your day against the other US zones
Assuming a 9am-5pm working day on the other team's clock, this is when you would need to be online in CT, and how many hours you actually share.
| Team zone | Shared hours | Your hours (CT) | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|
| Eastern | 7h | 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM | Full overlap |
| Mountain | 7h | 10:00 AM – 6:00 PM | Full overlap |
| Pacific | 6h | 11:00 AM – 7:00 PM | Strong overlap |
